Speak2See app is now on the app store!

Speak to See LLC Introduces a “Visual Hearing” Application that Facilitates Patient/Care Giver Communication for Those who are Hard of Hearing.
For medical professionals and family members who are caring for an increasingly elderly population, Speak to See, is an exciting new “visual hearing” application that alleviates the struggle of communicating with those who are hard of hearing. The application was developed by a long term care physician in response to the daily difficulties of communicating with aging patients and provides a practical and thoughtful interface that has been the result of 25 years of patient care.
The application interface is simple. Use either the pre-loaded questions or speak your own into your i-phone or i-pad, which instantly magnifies the text to full screen, allowing the hard of hearing patient to read and instantly respond. To clear and move to the next question all it takes is a simple shake of the phone, allowing for fluid and seamless patient interaction avoiding the disruptive typing that has increasingly been associated with electronic charting.
The initial idea for the application came from seeing many hard of hearing patients says the inventor, Dr. Thomas E. Dahlberg. “It’s difficult when you can’t communicate with your patients. You either end up gathering insufficient information or spend time uncomfortably yelling until the patient can hear. So far patients have responded immediately to the large text, answering questions with more detail and self assurance. I have been able to communicate more effectively and efficiently with patients I’ve been seeing for 15 years, and as a result I believe I’ve been able to deliver better patient care.”
Speak to See is a small, but significant example of a positive application for emerging technology in the medical field and its ability to enhance communication through real-time interactions. Not only does Speak to See stand to increase the efficiency of patient care as well as the quality of the experience for doctors and nurses, but it can be a valuable tool for families caring for aging parents at home. As a facilitator of communication, Speak to See’s primary objective is to enhance the general quality of life for patients, care takers, and loved ones surrounding—a refreshing goal and hopefully only the beginning of many more practical uses for technology and patient care in the future.

About Speak to See: the application includes pre-loaded questions that cover basic HMI etc.

5 reasons every small business should have an iPhone app

5 reasons every small business should have an iPhone app

  1. Evolution: It is important to continue evolving your business with the current trends and be prepared to adapt to the next thing. Adding mobile marketing and brand recognition to your marketing strategy is very cost-effective for small businesses and reaches out to a target market that you could be missing out on – the millions with an iphone.
  2. Builds Relationships: Mobile devices provide a personal connection between businesses and consumers. When your business goes mobile with its own app and on the App Store, your consumers can download your app and literally carry you around with them. By enhancing your brand with an iPhone application, you differentiate yourself from your competitors while offering another outlet to communicate with your customers.
  3. Push notifications: Allow you to reach consumers anytime and anywhere. They are similar to text messages in the way that they alert those who have downloaded your app. You can send messages about upcoming events, special deals, or updates about what’s going on with your company to anyone who has your app downloaded.
  4. Entertainment/engagement: Applications are the fun part about smart phones that have the ability to engage and entertain consumers. When waiting for an appointment, passing time in between class, or just curing boredom, smart phone users are always looking for new apps to check out.
  5. Integration: AppzDev LLC. can design the app for your business so it integrates your blog and social media sites. These sites can be accessed through your app in two touches.

iPad 3 expected on shelves March 16, plus another launch event planned

News is circulating around the Internet that the new iPad 3 will be available on March 16. Also, there will possibly be yet another launch event in addition to the one everyone is excited about tomorrow, March 7. According to 9to5Mac, an apparently “reliable Apple Store source” has revealed that preparations are being made for a big Apple Store event which will culminate on Friday, March 16.

iOS 6 Coming Soon?

Someone at Apple Is Surfing the Web on iOS 6 iPad-iOS6-600Apple appears to be testing the next version of its operating system for mobile devices, iOS 6. At least, that’s what device access logs to websites, including Mashable, seem to indicate.

The initial report came from Ars Technica, which says it discovered something unusual in its web logs. The technology site recorded several visits from browsers running on devices that claimed to be running iOS 6. There were also devices that were accessing the site on screens with a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 — the rumored pixel count of the iPad 3.

Some claim to be iPhones and others iPads using iOS6. Checking the IP address info of those visits with an online database revealed they came from Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. However, the only machines with 2,048 x 1,536 resolution seen in Mashable‘s logs were running Google Chrome, so they couldn’t be iPads.

Here’s a sample of some of the logs from Mashable:

17.202.39.47 – – [24/Feb/2012:14:03:59 -0600] “GET /2012/01/27/best-shit-people-say-videos/ HTTP/1.1? 200 15974 “http://m.digg.com/newsbar/topnews/15_best_sh_t_people_say_videos” “Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 6_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/535.8 (KHTML, like Gecko)”

17.202.39.47 – – [22/Feb/2012:12:38:13 -0600] “GET /2012/01/27/best-shit-people-say-videos/ HTTP/1.1? 200 15975 “http://m.digg.com/newsbar/topnews/15_best_sh_t_people_say_videos” “Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 6_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/535.8 (KHTML, like Gecko)”

The current version of Apple’s mobile software is iOS 5. Apple typically previews new versions of its mobile OS at a developers conference in the spring. Apple reps didn’t respond immediately to a request for comment.

As Ars notes, there’s at least one other product on the market with the so-called “retina” resolution that the iPad 3 is expected to have. But, obviously, nothing runs iOS 6 — unless it’s an Apple employee testing software by browsing the Internet. The most recent version is iOS 5.1, but that’s only been made available to developers.

On Tuesday, Apple sent out invitations to an event on March 7. The company holds upcoming products to the utmost secrecy. Apple almost never reveals product information until it is on the verge of release. It’s a big part of the allure the company’s brand has cultivated, and why Apple rumors have such currency.

Still, it’s impossible for Apple to keep everything it’s doing under wraps. It needs to test its products in real-world environments to ensure that the work properly. That can lead to information being released prematurely, which most notoriously happened when an Apple employee lost a prototype iPhone in a bar in 2010 only to have it fall into the hands of tech blog Gizmodo.

Whereas that was a careless accident, the discovery of retina iPads running iOS 6 is more of a natural consequence. After all, Apple must test its software with the real Internet at some point, and that testing will leave tracks.

Apple isn’t expected to release iOS 6 at Wednesday’s event, but is probably testing it now in advance of a spring unveiling.

Japanese users can enable or disable this notification which is continuously connected to Japan’s earthquake warning system and can show warnings in minutes, seconds before the earthquake. It may eat-up lot of battery power due to its continuous data fetching from the warning system. But it’s a great feature added by Apple to show they care about safety.
  4. New Cards app: Compose, Send, Print beautiful cards to beloved ones. Printing service is also available from none other than Apple itself. Shipping, Push-notifications from UPSC about the shipment. (The world is trying to save paper. Somebody please tell Apple)
  5. Find Friends & Family: Easily locate friends and family from the device. Limited social-networking. Kind of Foursquare
  6. Artificial Intelligence called Siri: (This feature is initially available in iPhone 4S but Apple might port it to iPhone 4 due to heavy public demand. If they don’t – I guess jailbreakers can port it just like they ported multi-tasking. Siri should get shipped in OS irrespective of the device so its only matter of enabling it from default disabled mode.) I have this feature covered under speech-to-text but I am putting it here because it looks like more than that. We can actually order something and Siri responds to our requests. She just does not listen but thinks upon it. This is a typical Apple kind of innovation that keeps them on-top. No mobile phone has this feature.
  7. Enhancement on Exchange accounts that have Mail disabled, now receive calendar invites with notifications and ability to accept/decline/tentatively respond. (Previously, if mail was disabled you would not receive calendar/meeting invites, the meeting would merely show up on your calendar as tentative, and even then it only shows up if the invite was received & added to the calendar in Outlook running on a laptop etc.) As emailed by Roland Theron

iPad 3 Rumors and other info

Unless Apple is conning the world, the iPad 3 should be announced next week. It, like its forbears, is the subject of many a rumor, some more likely than others. We’ve collected most of them here in this post with arguments for and against, for your convenience and flaming pleasure.

Of course, we’ll be there to cover the event live, and will (if past events are any indication) get a nice hands-on as well.

Retina screen

Argument:

  • Natural evolution of Apple brand
  • Component already spied
  • It’s on the invitation

Objection:

  • There aren’t really any objections at this point

Judgment: This was a long shot last year, but it looks like a sure thing this year. Apple’s high-res screen should be 2048×1536, exactly twice the dimensions of the original iPad. This will allow for smooth upscaling of old content while enabling the same nearly pixel-less UI already seen on the iPhone 4, among other things. Others are creeping up, though: Asus just showed off a 10.1? tablet at 1920×1200.

Capacitive bezel

Argument:

  • Apple is serious about removing physical buttons
  • Patents for hot bezels have been seen
  • Invite picture shows no button

Objection:

  • Invite picture could be just in landscape mode
  • The clicky home button is an iconic feature of iOS devices
  • Capacitive buttons and non-display surfaces can be confusing or annoying
  • The whole point of an iPad is touching the screen

Judgment: While the powerful gestures of the Playbook and webOS’s non-display gesture areas (i.e. hot bezels) are clear, it’s not at all clear whether Apple is ready to include those things in their UX vocabulary. Simplicity and usability is the word with the iPad, and Apple’s focus has always been on the on-screen interface (especially with a screen-centered device). It doesn’t seem likely to us, but a smaller aspect such as stroking the side instead of a volume button could possibly be in our future. And it doesn’t seem likely that Apple would spoil the surprise of a feature like “no buttons” on the invitation like that.

Quad-core CPU

Argument:

  • Need the power to handle improved graphics and higher resolution
  • Everyone else is doing it
  • People love cores

Objection:

  • iPad buyers don’t actually care about cores
  • Improved GPU unit more integral to graphics than extra processing cores
  • “A5X” chip already spied, suggesting smaller step in this case

Judgment: Four cores just doesn’t seem right. Apple rarely competes on specs, and some of their most popular products have been conspicuously less powerful than the competition. Their style of chip design is more about specialization, not general-purpose firehose-style CPUs like on PCs. We don’t expect this to happen next week, though later in the year could be another story. More likely is the A5X already spotted, with GPU improvements and other things specific to Apple’s requirements.

iPhone 4S-style camera

Argument:

  • Apple already buying these camera stacks in bulk
  • Creation/media apps on iPad blowing up, will be improved by new screen
  • The old iPad camera is awful and will look even worse on high-res screen

Objection:

  • iPad as camera is pretty awkward, be honest
  • Apple wants to keep 4S as only premium-camera offering

Judgment: The chances are good for this one. The improved camera stack is likely just the new standard Apple is bringing to its device line; the more it can put out there, the fewer regular cameras people are buying, and the more they rely on Apple devices for the whole media creation process. And the 4S has already had itself a nice lead time to sell as the premium camera device. Time to spread the love. It may not be the same exact unit but it will probably share at least some of the improvements (back side illumination, better lens).

Thicker case

Argument:

  • New screen requires more significant backlighting, which takes up space
  • More battery needed for backlight, new chip, etc
  • “Thin” could be addressed by separate device or lower-cost iPad 2
  • Again, the component has been written about

Objection:

  • What is this “thicker” you speak of, Apple products get thinner

Judgment: Apple is up against a few physical laws here, and those are notoriously difficult to violate: battery energy density, the strength of a certain width of aluminum, the depth of PCBs and chips. A really serious change in size is out of the question, but a small enough one that it’s more or less imperceptible? The report linked has it coming it at under a centimeter thick, which was probably the magic number they wanted to stay under. Anything over that would be uncivilized. It’s not going to be the thinnest tablet in the world (the market is too diverse now to claim that title for long anyway) so they’ll focus on their being under a centimeter with better battery life and a better screen than anyone else (for as long as that can be claimed).

LTE

Argument:

  • AT&T and Verizon are the LTE guys and iPad is already offered by them
  • It would make sense with Apple’s new bandwidth-heavy services (iCloud)

Objection:

  • AT&T and Verizon’s LTE networks would probably buckle under ten million iPads
  • Cost and throttling issues would be trouble
  • Coverage is a concern: iPad is for everyone, LTE is not
  • International compatibility is a concern

Judgment: This is tricky because the iPad 3 will be on the market for a year at least, and LTE is an evolving product, becoming more common and desired. Right now you would have to explain to many iPad buyers what LTE is and why it’s better than 3G. Apple would hate to roll out something that’s slow compared to mobile phones, but at the same time an LTE debut would almost certainly be a mess, with the bandwidth and coverage problems AT&T had for every iPhone. A stepped release could happen: wi-fi only until, say, June. Or the chip supporting LTE could ship but not be activated until AT&T and Verizon say it’s okay. Unlikely Apple would ship an incomplete product because of the carriers’ problems, though. This is a wild card.

iPad Mini

Argument:

  • The rumors refuse to die
  • Kindle Fire is extremely popular, iPad Mini could tap that market
  • Low-cost iPad could reach new markets
  • Original 1024×7268 resolution could be used

Objection:

  • Apple’s not interested in going downmarket
  • The iPad isn’t that size and shape by accident, 4:3 and 9.7? is “perfect”
  • It would be seen as imitative, not innovative

Judgment: As much as we might enjoy an iPad Mini, it doesn’t look like it’s in the cards. Apple has committed to the iPad as it is, they are launching a strong new version at that size, with a high-resolution screen. To release a smaller, low-res version would be like saying that maybe the iPad as it is isn’t for everyone. That’s a bad message to send.

Mountain Lion features

Argument:

  • Further integration of Twitter would be a welcome feature
  • The features in Mountain Lion are clearly meant to spread to iOS

Objection:

  • Mountain Lion features before Mountain Lion even comes out?

Judgment: Seems pretty likely that the cloud, syncing, and some 4S features will make it to the iPad, likely in the form of iOS 5.1. This will probably be announced but shipped later, since Mountain Lion and 5.1 for other devices are both still in development.

No more 30-pin connector

Argument:

  • Thunderbolt and wireless syncing together make this cable obsolete
  • They need the space this cable port takes up
  • New design could be necessary for thinning the case

Objection:

  • Partial thunderbolt integration would let them keep form factor, add features
  • Yes it’s going away, but not yet
  • There are just too many 30-pin accessories out there

Judgment: The 30-pin connector is in all likelihood going to stick around for this device. If it gets dumped anywhere, it will probably be on the iPhone 5. Right now Thunderbolt isn’t ubiquitous enough and not enough people are comfortable relying on cloud and wireless syncing. Tweaking the cable to partially support Thunderbolt is another option, but it’s kind of an awkward one. It would deprecate old cables and accessories while not supporting all the cool Thunderbolt features they’d want to highlight. For now things might just have to remain the same, with iOS and OS X gently pushing the user towards the future solution.

Orangutans using iPads to paint and video chat with other apes

Orangutans across the world may soon join the ranks of millions of humans as proud owners of new iPads. As strange as that may sound, a conservation group is testing its “Apps for Apes” program, allowing orangutans to communicate with each other remotely via the iPad’s video chat technology.

Orangutan Outreach founder Richard Zimmerman has already donated iPads to zoos in Milwaukee, Houston, Atlanta and Florida, and will soon send iPads to the Memphis Zoo, the Center for Great Apes in Florida and to the Toronto Zoo. Orangutans are considered to be amongst the most intelligent of primates, making them a good case study for the interactive technology.

“It’s not a gimmick,” Zimmerman told Yahoo News in a phone interview Tuesday. “If they don’t want to do it, they won’t. There are actual measurable benefits.”

Zimmerman said that orangutans in zoos and other primate facilities usually receive all the food and love they need. However, during winter months they are forced to spend long periods of time indoors, which is counter to their natural habitat. And living indoors for extended periods of time can result in boredom and stunt social growth among other primates.

“They need stimulation, especially indoors,” Zimmerman tells Yahoo News. “The zoo keepers can see the benefit from this sort of enrichment. We’re doing this as enrichment as opposed to research. But researchers are getting involved, that’s just not our jurisdiction.”

Scientists and layman alike have long speculated on ways to better indoctrinate primates and other animals with human technology. Dolphins have already demonstrated an ability to interact with iPad technology with researchers using it as a language interaction device between dolphins and humans. There are even several iPad games made specifically for cats.
But even more interesting possibilities present themselves once a number of zoos have their orangutans acclimated to using the iPads. Zimmerman said he hopes they will be able to use Skype or the iPad’s FaceTime feature to communicate remotely with orangutans at other zoos during “play dates.” Zimmerman said he recently visited Jahe, an orangutan at the Memphis Zoo who used to live at the Toronto Zoo. When Zimmerman showed Jahe a photo on his iPhone of some of her relatives still living in Toronto, she appeared to recognize them.

“Given an opportunity to demonstrate that intelligence, it’s pretty amazing,” Zimmerman tells Yahoo News.

The biggest obstacle for now is coming up with the funding to purchase more iPads. Orangutan Outreach refuses to use its funds on the tablets, saying its priorities must be toward conservation and helping to rescue orangutans that are victims of violence in the wild.

Zimmerman said so far he has been unable to reach Apple directly about any possible donations for the project. “I could get them to the zoos tomorrow,” Zimmerman said, if Apple were to make such a donation. “Our Plan B has been to hopefully get their attention through this effort.”
